19/03/2018 President and Council Members of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) visit NNDC Ltd

The President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) Professor Segun Ajibola, FCIB in company of the Institute’s Registrar Mr Seye Awojobi, FCIB and some council members paid a familiarization visit to NNDC Corporate Headquarters, Kaduna on 19th March, 2018.

In his presentation, the CIBN President Prof. Segun Ajibola thanked NNDC for accepting the Council’s invitation and also congratulated the Management on the establishment of New Nigeria Commodity Marketing Company, Limited (NNCMC). He said CIBN is statutorily empowered to promote and sustain ethics and professionalism in banking and finance practice in Nigeria. The Institute enforces and entrenches discipline among practitioners. He further added that the Institute serves as an alternative dispute resolution platform between banks and their customers and among banks without recourse to litigation. According to him, the CIBN collaborates with other international banking regulatory bodies across the globe in order to imbibe the best global practice. In its advocacy role, the CIBN collaborates with the judiciary, legislature and prominent corporate organisations for capacity building for top management and senior executives.

Professor Ajibola requested for a partnership between CIBN and NNDC to encourage northern students become certified bankers by pursuing professional banking careers through the establishment of special study centres in the northern states.

The CIBN president appealed to NNDC to include professional banking qualification of Associate Chartered Bankers (ACB) in the NNDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme under the Young Professionals Development Trust (YPDT). He further appealed that NNDC should assist students of northern extraction in the nineteen CIBN affiliated higher institutions in the north by paying their registration and tuition fees

The President urged NNDC Ltd to be part of activities of the Institute through networking with banking and finance professionals and academia. To this end, he announced that the ACB Annual lecture would come up in June 2018 in Abuja. He encouraged NNDC to sponsor senior management staff and executives to CIBN conferences. He also used the opportunity to extend invitation to NNDC Ltd to participate in the valedictory lecture of the 19th CIBN President that would come up on May 18, 2018.

The representative of the GMD at the meeting, the Executive Director, Management Services Directorate; Mrs. Kaneng Dokotri Adole thanked the CIBN’s President and Council members for their visit and noted that CIBN’s engagements are far reaching. She appreciated the commendation on the giant strides of the current management. She congratulated the 19th President on his stewardship. She observed that CIBN is a highly structured Institution and that the Institute’s advocacy brings about confidence building, promotion of ethics and professionalism.

The Executive Director observed that there would be a follow-up on the earlier talks on collaboration between NNDC and CIBN because capacity building is a key mandate of NNDC and bringing up of young professionals of northern extraction through collaborations with various professional Institutes is the ultimate objective. She pledged that NNDC would be part of the Institutes programmes whenever it receives an invitation.

In the same vein, the Executive Director, Business Development; Alhaji Abass Waziri congratulated the Institute on its successful hosting of the world bankers conference and expressed delight at the ethics and professionalism in the Institute.   

Reacting to CIBN’s presentation, the NNDC Executive Director, Investment Supervision Directorate, Alhaji Abdullahi Ali Gombe mni appealed to the Institute to advise the Bankers Committee on the need to safeguard the interest of shareholders in the newly introduced policy by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on dividend payment by banks.

Also present at the meeting were the NNDC’s Company Secretary and Legal Adviser, Barrister Barnabas Baba and other Management Staff.
