In his welcome address, the Ag. GMD congratulated the Chairman on his recent appointment by the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF). He noted that the Chairman is not new to the NNDC family – he has had interactions at various levels and at various times with the Institution and he has been involved in many things Arewa and has a deep passion for the development of Northern Nigeria. He is also the coordinator of the Northern Nigeria Global Economic Re-integration Programme (NNGERP) established to promote the speedy economic transformation of Northern Nigeria.
The Ag. GMD also noted that NNDC is privileged to have Mallam Tanimu Yakubu as its Chairman at this critical phase of its existence which coincided with the setting up of a Committee by the NSGF to restructure the operations of the Company. He further stated that the new Chairman has held several important positions at the federal and state levels among which are the Chief Economic Adviser to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the late President and the Commissioner of Finance & Budgeting in Katsina State. He had also been the MD/CEO of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. The Ag. GMD noted that the Company will benefit immensely from the Chairman’s wealth of experience and expertise.
In his response, the Chairman thanked the Ag. GMD and his team for their warm welcome. He commended the clean and conducive working environment of NNDC, as well as the composition of staff, which shows that the owner states are well represented. Alluding to the earlier statement of the Ag. GMD on the critical phase of the Company, the Chairman noted that the challenges being experienced by the Company are not limited to it. He took a holistic view of the situation by going down memory lane to situate the problems on the global economic melt-down. He also provided a historical perspective of the Nigerian economy as well as the current economic and security situation in the country which have contributed to the prevalent poverty in the North.
He reiterated that NNDC should not be indifferent to its regional mandate and for staff to consider themselves as very critical stakeholders in the socio-economic turn-around of the North. All hands must therefore be on deck to contribute to the growth of the Company through the identification of viable businesses and attracting funding for projects. He further said that the Company has a rich history and has produced many captains of industry in the Country’s critical sectors, and that he believed that staff can still replicate past feats which will put the Company back on a solid footing.
In his closing remark, the Ag. GMD stated that Management looked forward to the Chairman’s advice and guidance and pledged the unalloyed support and cooperation of the entire staff in order to take the Company to the next level.
